Cinemalaya 2013 Experience

So Cinemalaya 2013 has just wrapped up. Congratulations to all the winners! :) I'm happy because, finally, I was able to attend a real film fest in the Philippines. Well, I've watched a few films at the MMFF the past few years, but, it's not really... it just doesn't feel like... uhmmm... Anyway, I've been an attendee of film fests abroad, and what kind of Filipino would that make me if I didn't support our own now that I had the chance?

Given my work schedule, I was able to watch just three films at Cinemalaya this year -- which, btw, are all superb:

Thanks to the director of the film, Jerrold Tarog, for giving us free tickets to Sana Dati's gala night! (The company I work for co-produced the film Senior Year with Jerrold. Hence, the association and the free tickets. Hihi.) I'm happy that this was the first film I watched because it made me want to watch more films. Even though my boss had told some of us how the story would end (he has a copy of the script), we were still all very excited to see it on the big screen. I heard this film won "Best Film" under the Director's Showcase category. A big CONGRATS! It's a well-deserved award!

Okay, this film deserves international recognition. Seriously. The word outstanding is even an understatement. It's something I'd watch at TIFF. I heard it's going to the Berlin International Film Fest. I hope it would make it big there. Hands down to Hannah Espia and the rest of the team for winning "Best Film" in the New Breed Category! And I don't know why, but while watching the film, I just knew that Jasmin Curtis-Smith would win the supporting actress award. The actors were all very good but newcomer Jasmin and child actor Marc Justine Alvarez really stood out for me. Also, kudos to their Hebrew language coaches! I was so amazed that their Hebrew sounded so legit.

Of course, Vilma Santos's performance in this film is stellar, as it is in all her films. It's no big question why she won Best Actress. What I liked about the film so much is that it showed the reality of media production. Being a person who works for the same industry, I totally related to the story. Well, I don't work for a drama series, or as an "Ekstra", but I like how the film presented that the media industry is not all glitz and glamour as a lot of people think.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend Cinemalaya Film Fest 2014 because I might be back in Canada around the same time next year. But if ever one of these films make it to TIFF, I will be first in line, supporting Filipino-produced films. :)

Typhoon Haiyan: Ways to donate if you live in Canada

#prayforthePhilippines Philippines needs help. I just left the Philippines to move back to Canada when the storm hit the country -- being away, this is the least I can do. As you all know, Super Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) made headlines around the world not just because it is one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded in history, but also because it had caused great devastation to many towns in the Philippines, and killed thousands and thousands of Filipinos. Even though the storm had left the Philippine Area of Responsibility, many are still in danger of getting sick or dying because many are without home, food, clothes and even clean water right now. Video from CNN It is known that Canadians are among the most generous of people in the world. Let us show, once again, how compassionate we all are by donating to the typhoon victims.  I have compiled links to different NGO sites where you can forward your monetary donations. Please feel ...

Thank You for New Windows

Photo by Thea Sandoval Who doesn't love beautiful and peaceful fall mornings? All mornings spent at home are beautiful to me, but the magnificence of the autumn season just magnifies its simple beauty. Last night, we had a fun, gleeful Thanksgiving celebration with my parents' Couples for Christ family. This morning I woke up to an opposite ambience -- it was quiet and calm, with sunrays coming through the windows and all. I sat beside our living room window and I said a little "thank you" inside that all is well with my soul again. I started thanking God for all His small blessings that we fail to notice when our lives become a little less than perfect. Art from seedsoffaith.com It's been months since I was able to really stop and appreciate the beauty of life and all the gifts that were given to me. I thought this morning was the perfect time for me to reflect and say a " salamat " (thank you) for everything. First and foremost, I am thank...

Happiness in a cup

photo by Thessa Sandoval I'm a certified tea lover. Truth is, I used to ignore tea. I have an overly sensitive tummy and when I was younger, my  lola  (grandma) often told me that drinking tea would do my tummy some good, but I didn't take her advice. I started loving it when I moved to Canada. Since it's freezing cold there, especially during winter, a hot drink in your hand is a staple. I don't drink coffee and I can't have hot chocolate all the time (because, as I've said, my tummy's ultra sensitive and having hot choco all day will set it off like a ticking bomb), so my last option is to have tea... and that's how I fell in love with it. It's true, love can be learned.  Hihi .  I love it so much now that I would visit the Vintage Tea Room on  Locke St. in Hamilton  with my friend Ayeza and pay for tea reading afterwards!  "Tea Freak" image source: downthatlittlelane.com.au my friend Ayeza and I share the ...
